Friend Birthday Wishes Messages in Hindi

A Hindi birthday wish for a friend is a short message built on one greeting — जन्मदिन मुबारक हो, जन्मदिन की शुभकामनाएं or जन्मदिन की बधाई — chosen to match how close your friend is, your friend’s gender, and which of Hindi’s three words for “you” you use. Every wish below is copy-ready, with romanised text and an English meaning.

How to choose the right Hindi birthday wish for your friend

Hindi Birthday Wishes for Friends

A Hindi birthday wish for a friend comes down to four choices: which greeting to use, which word for “friend”, which of Hindi’s three words for “you”, and whether your friend is a woman or a man. Get those four right and almost any message below will land well.

The three greetings are not duplicates of each other. Each is built on a different word, and the difference shows in what that word means and where it came from.

Which greeting — मुबारक, शुभकामनाएं or बधाई

Hindi Birthday Greetings Mubarak, Shubhkamnayein and Badhai

जन्मदिन मुबारक हो, जन्मदिन की शुभकामनाएं and जन्मदिन की बधाई all mean happy birthday, and the difference between them is what the key word means and where that word came from.

Greeting The key word means Origin Use it when
जन्मदिन मुबारक हो मुबारक — blessed, auspicious, bringing बरकत Arabic by default, with almost any friend and in almost any tone
जन्मदिन की शुभकामनाएं शुभकामना — a wish for someone’s welfare Sanskritic the tone should be more formal or traditional: cards, elders, written messages
जन्मदिन की बधाई बधाई — congratulation on a happy or successful occasion Sanskrit you are congratulating rather than blessing: a milestone year, an occasion, a success

Each row rests on a dictionary entry. शब्दसागर records मुबारक as [अ॰] — Arabic — and defines it as “जिसके कारण बरकत हो” and “शुभ, मंगलप्रद, मंगलमय”, that which brings blessing, auspicious (शब्दसागर, मुबारक); Rekhta records the same Arabic origin with the gloss “auspicious, blessed, lucky propitious, happy” (Rekhta, मुबारक).

शुभकामना is defined as “मंगल कामना; कल्याण या भलाई के लिए की जाने वाली कामना” — a wish made for someone’s welfare — and is listed as a feminine noun (Hindwi, शुभकामना).

बधाई is the congratulation word: शब्दसागर traces it to Sanskrit and defines its relevant sense as a message expressing joy “इष्ट मित्र के शुभ, आनंद या सफलता के अवसर पर” — on an auspicious, joyful or successful occasion — equating it with मुबारकबाद, and lists it as feminine (शब्दसागर, बधाई).

On tone, a language-learning guide treats जन्मदिन मुबारक हो as the phrase for most situations, with जन्मदिन की शुभकामनाएँ carrying “a more formal, traditional tone” (Preply, how to say happy birthday in Hindi).

Pick like this: मुबारक fits any friend in any tone. शुभकामनाएं suits an older friend, a card, or a message you want to read as considered. बधाई suits a message that congratulates rather than blesses.

Which word for “friend” — दोस्त, यार, जिगरी दोस्त, परम मित्र

Hindi Friendship Words for Birthday Wishes

दोस्त, यार, जिगरी दोस्त and परम मित्र are not interchangeable: यार is warmer and more conversational than दोस्त, and जिगरी दोस्त and परम मित्र sit at the closest tier of all.

Word What it signals Where it came from
दोस्त neutral, everyday friend Persian. The dictionary lists it as a masculine noun meaning मित्र or यार.
यार warm, spoken, between peers Persian yār, “helper, friend”
जिगरी दोस्त closest friend, almost family जिगर is Persian for liver — historically treated as the seat of courage and feeling
परम मित्र the dearest friend, slightly formal Sanskritic; param means supreme

The जिगरी दोस्त entry is worth knowing because it explains the word’s warmth. जिगर literally means liver, and the dictionary carries its wider senses as “the innermost part, interior, essential part; the vitals, the heart, mind, spirit; courage, pluck,” with जिगरी glossed in Hindi as बेहद करीबी and अंतरंग — extremely close, intimate (Rekhta dictionary entry for जिगर; entry for जिगरी). A जिगरी दोस्त is, quite literally, a friend who lives in your vitals.

For contrast, मित्र comes from Sanskrit mitrá, whose older root sense is glossed as “that which causes binding” (Wiktionary entry for mitra) — which is why मित्र sounds more formal and a little literary next to दोस्त.

Pick like this: यार or जिगरी दोस्त for someone you speak to every week; दोस्त for a friend you are fond of but do not speak to daily; परम मित्र when you want the warmth to sound considered rather than casual.

Which “you” — तू, तुम or आप

Hindi Birthday Wishes: Tu, Tum and Aap

Hindi has three second-person formality levels: तू for an intimate friend, तुम for a familiar one, and आप for an older friend, a senior, or anyone you address politely. The verb changes with the pronoun, so this decision shapes the whole sentence.

Pronoun Verb form Use it for
तू तू है a close friend your own age — the default between best friends
तुम तुम हो a friend you are friendly with but not intimate with
आप आप हैं an older friend, a senior, a colleague, an in-law

The forms तू है, तुम हो and आप हैं are the standard teaching examples in Hindi courses (A Door Into Hindi, University of North Carolina). तू is grammatically singular, while तुम and आप are grammatically plural even when addressing one person — a common source of confusion, since the plural form is the normal way to address an individual (T–V distinction in Hindi-Urdu).

The one mistake to avoid: तू is not a friendly catch-all. Outside genuinely intimate contexts, using it can sound rude or dismissive rather than warm. If you are unsure whether you have earned तू with this friend, use तुम.

Which register to pick: if you and your friend address each other by first name and have never once been formal, use तू. If the friendship is warm but has any formality in it, use तुम. If your friend is older than you, use आप regardless of how close you are.

Is your friend a woman? The one wording change

Hindi Birthday Wishes for a Female Friend

Write मेरी दोस्त for a female friend and मेरा दोस्त for a male friend, because दोस्त is a masculine noun and the possessive carries your friend’s gender.

The possessive is the single most common error in Hindi birthday wishes, and it is invisible to anyone reading in English, because English uses one word for both. Oxford Languages’ Hindi definition lists दोस्त as a masculine noun of Persian origin meaning मित्र or यार (bab.la, दोस्त). The noun keeps its masculine form; only the possessive changes.

  • Male friend: मेरा दोस्त — mera dost
  • Female friend: मेरी दोस्त — meri dost

You may also see सहेली, which dictionaries define as a female companion or female friend, from Sanskrit sah plus a Hindi suffix (Wiktionary, सखी; सहेली dictionary definition). Traditionally सहेली describes one woman’s female friend and can sound dated or oddly specific when a man uses it about a woman. मेरी दोस्त is the safer, more current choice, and it is what the messages on this page use.

The closest-friend wishes below use जिगरी दोस्त and परम मित्र and are written in the तू register, which is the natural level between intimate friends. Each message shows the Devanagari text, a romanised version you can type quickly, and the English meaning so you know exactly what you are sending.

Every message in this section addresses a male friend. The female-friend forms follow in the next section.

Birthday wishes for a female friend in Hindi

The wishes below address a female friend with मेरी दोस्त and feminine agreement, and they stay in the तू register used between close friends. The endings that change with your friend’s gender are the adjectives and participles describing her, not the wish itself: हँसता रह becomes हँसती रह, while खुश रह stays खुश रह because खुश does not change.

जन्मदिन मुबारक हो मेरी दोस्त! तू हमेशा ऐसे ही हँसती रहे।
Janamdin mubarak ho meri dost! Tu hamesha aise hi hansti rahe.
Happy birthday, my friend! May you always keep laughing like this.

मेरी दोस्त, तेरी दोस्ती मेरे लिए बहुत कीमती है। जन्मदिन मुबारक हो।
Meri dost, teri dosti mere liye bahut keemti hai. Janmadin mubarak ho.

Tu jahan bhi rahe, khush rahe. Janmadin mubarak ho meri dost.
Wherever you are, stay happy. Happy birthday, my friend.

ईश्वर तुझे हर खुशी दे। जन्मदिन मुबारक हो मेरी दोस्त।
Ishwar tujhe har khushi de. Janmadin mubarak ho meri dost.
May God give you every happiness. Happy birthday, my friend.

If you are sending to a woman you are not close to, change तू to आप and तुझे to आपको — मेरी दोस्त stays the same.

Funny birthday wishes for a friend in Hindi

Funny Hindi Birthday Wishes for Friends

Funny Hindi birthday wishes for a friend work when the joke is about ageing, habits, or the friendship itself, and fail when it is about appearance, income, or family. The safe target is the two of you; the unsafe target is who your friend is.

बूढ़ा हो रहा है तू, पर तेरी शरारतें आज भी जवान हैं। जन्मदिन मुबारक हो!
Budha ho raha hai tu, par teri shararatein aaj bhi jawaan hain. Janmadin mubarak ho!
You are getting old, but your mischief is still young. Happy birthday!

उम्र बढ़ रही है, अक्ल आने का इंतज़ार है। जन्मदिन मुबारक हो यार!
Umr badh rahi hai, akl aane ka intezaar hai. Janmadin mubarak ho yaar!
Your age is increasing; we are still waiting for the wisdom. Happy birthday, yaar!

एक साल और गुज़र गया, और तू अब भी वही पागल है। जन्मदिन मुबारक हो।
Ek saal aur guzar gaya, aur tu ab bhi wahi paagal hai. Janmadin mubarak ho.
Another year has passed, and you are still exactly that crazy. Happy birthday.

केक तू काट, पार्टी मैं करूँगा। जन्मदिन मुबारक हो दोस्त!
Cake tu kaat, party main karunga. Janmadin mubarak ho dost!
You cut the cake; I will handle the party. Happy birthday, dost!

Two adjustments to make if your friend is a woman. The adjective and verb that describe her take feminine forms — बूढ़ा becomes बूढ़ी, हो रहा है becomes हो रही है, and पागल is commonly written पगली. The first message then reads बूढ़ी हो रही है तू, पर तेरी शरारतें आज भी जवान हैं। And if you are a woman, the verb about yourself changes too: पार्टी मैं करूँगा becomes पार्टी मैं करूँगी.

Hatke birthday wishes — when the usual lines won’t do

हटके means different or offbeat, and a hatke birthday wish earns that label by naming something specific to your friendship rather than by being louder than the standard lines. The word is idiomatic and invariable — it is not a form of any verb — and speakers discussing it treat it as meaning “different”, sometimes “unique” (Hindi-Urdu usage discussion of हटके). That is usage testimony rather than a dictionary definition, which is why it is labelled as such here.

फूल लेकर आना आसान था। तेरे जैसा दोस्त मिलना आसान नहीं था। जन्मदिन मुबारक हो।
Phool lekar aana aasan tha. Tere jaisa dost milna aasan nahi tha. Janmadin mubarak ho.
Bringing flowers was easy. Finding a friend like you was not. Happy birthday.

तेरा जन्मदिन है, और मैं अब भी यही सोच रहा हूँ — तू मेरे साथ अटका कैसे रह गया? जन्मदिन मुबारक हो!
Tera janmadin hai, aur main ab bhi yahi soch raha hoon — tu mere saath atka kaise reh gaya? Janmadin mubarak ho!
It is your birthday, and I am still wondering — how did you end up stuck with me? Happy birthday!

आज का दिन तेरा है, पर मेरी ज़िंदगी आज भी तेरे नाम है। जन्मदिन मुबारक हो।
Aaj ka din tera hai, par meri zindagi aaj bhi tere naam hai. Janmadin mubarak ho.
Today belongs to you, but my life still carries your name. Happy birthday.

दोस्ती का हिसाब लगाऊँ तो तू पहले से ही बहुत आगे है। जन्मदिन मुबारक हो।
Dosti ka hisaab lagaun to tu pehle se hi bahut aage hai. Janmadin mubarak ho.
If I counted what our friendship owes, you would already be far ahead. Happy birthday.

The trick with hatke is the detail. A message that mentions one real thing you two did together will read as hatke even if every other line in it is ordinary.

दुआ or आशीर्वाद? Choosing the blessing for a friend

दुआ is the word for a blessing sent to a friend or an equal, whatever the ages involved; आशीर्वाद is traditionally given by elders to those younger, so a peer sending आशीर्वाद can imply a seniority they do not have.

Both words are usually translated as “blessing”, which is why they get mixed up. The Hindi dictionary entry for दुआ gives its senses as आशीर्वाद; शुभकामना; ईश्वर से प्रार्थना या याचना करना — a wish, and specifically a petition directed to God — and lists it as a feminine noun (दुआ का हिंदी अर्थ). The entry for आशीर्वाद gives बड़ों का छोटों के लिए शुभ उद्गार — the good words of elders for those younger — and lists it as a masculine noun (आशीर्वाद का हिंदी अर्थ).

Word Grammar Who gives it to whom
दुआ feminine — मेरी दुआ anyone, to anyone. The natural word between friends.
आशीर्वाद masculine — मेरा आशीर्वाद an elder to someone younger in age or position

A reference work states the custom plainly: आशीर्वाद is what elders give when someone younger in age or position greets them (आशीर्वाद definition).

In a wish: between friends, say दुआ. तेरे लिए यही दुआ है — तू हमेशा खुश रहे। Use आशीर्वाद only if you are genuinely the elder in the relationship.

Watch the grammar too. Because दुआ is feminine and आशीर्वाद is masculine, the forms differ: मेरी दुआ, मेरी दुआएं, मेरा आशीर्वाद. Getting the word right and the gender wrong is still an error.

If your friend is older than you

For a friend older than you, use the आप register and prefer शुभकामनाएं or मुबारक over तू forms; आशीर्वाद fits only if you are the elder.

Getting the register wrong here costs more than a clumsy sentence — it reads as disrespect rather than warmth. Older friends, seniors at work, and in-laws all take आप regardless of how close you are.

आपको जन्मदिन की ढेर सारी शुभकामनाएं। आप सदा स्वस्थ और खुश रहें।
Aapko janmadin ki dher saari shubhkamnayein. Aap sada swasth aur khush rahein.
Many happy birthday wishes to you. May you always stay healthy and happy.

आपके जन्मदिन पर बहुत-बहुत शुभकामनाएं। ईश्वर आपको लंबी उम्र दे।
Aapke janmadin par bahut bahut shubhkamnayein. Ishwar aapko lambi umr de.
Many, many birthday wishes. May God grant you a long life.

आप जैसे दोस्त मिलना सौभाग्य की बात है। आपको जन्मदिन की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएं।
Aap jaise dost milna saubhagya ki baat hai. Aapko janmadin ki hardik shubhkamnayein.
Finding a friend like you is good fortune. Heartfelt birthday wishes to you.

Notice that दोस्त does not change here — the respect is carried by आप and by the plural verb forms, not by the noun.

Making the message yours — name, memory, and how much English to mix

A friend’s name fits naturally as a vocative — दोस्त, यार or जिगरी before or after the greeting — and English words can be mixed into a Hindi wish deliberately, because Hindi–English mixing is a documented register rather than a mistake.

Adding a name without breaking the grammar

The safest place for a name is where a vocative already belongs: right after the greeting, or right before it.

  • जन्मदिन मुबारक हो, राहुल! — the name follows the greeting
  • राहुल, जन्मदिन मुबारक हो! — the name comes first, then the greeting
  • जन्मदिन मुबारक हो मेरे दोस्त राहुल। — friend word and name together

Two things to avoid. Do not insert a name in the middle of a sentence where the grammar expects a pronoun — तेरे जैसा दोस्त मिलना breaks if you replace तेरे with a name. And do not add a second-person pronoun after a name you have already used as a vocative; राहुल, तू जन्मदिन मुबारक हो sounds like an announcement rather than a wish.

How much English to mix

Mixing English into Hindi is normal, systematic, and studied — not a sign that a sender does not know Hindi. A Hindi–English code-switching corpus built for speech research contains 25,988 sentences and 0.58 million words (IITG-HingCoS corpus), and a more recent corpus records that around 36.65% of the adult utterances collected contained code-switching, with switches occurring inside sentences far more often than between them (HiACC Hinglish code-switched corpus).

The evidence supports three legitimate levels to choose from:

Level What it looks like Feels like
शुद्ध हिंदी जन्मदिन मुबारक हो। तेरी दोस्ती मेरी सबसे बड़ी दौलत है। formal, considered, safe with older friends
Light mixing जन्मदिन मुबारक हो यार! आज तेरा special day है। natural to most speakers today
Heavy Hinglish Happy Birthday yaar! Party solid honi chahiye aaj. casual, younger, close-friends-only

A practical rule: the closer the friend and the younger the pair of you, the more English you can keep. The older the recipient or the more formal the relationship, the less you should.

Fitting the wish into one message — length, emoji and channel

Message-length limits depend on the app and the network, not on Devanagari itself: a single SMS carries far fewer Devanagari characters than English text, while messaging apps allow several times more.

If you send by SMS, the constraint is real. A standard SMS carries 160 characters in the GSM alphabet, but drops to 70 characters when the message contains any character outside that alphabet — which includes Devanagari letters and emoji alike. A single emoji is enough to trigger the change (SMS length and Unicode explained; the character sets are specified in 3GPP TS 23.038, Alphabets and language-specific information).

The practical numbers matter more than the theory. Counting the Devanagari characters of the wishes on this page:

  • जन्मदिन मुबारक हो दोस्त is 23 characters — it fits anywhere.
  • A two-line wish like जन्मदिन मुबारक हो दोस्त। तेरा दिन खुशियों से भरा हो। is 52 characters — still comfortable.
  • Most wishes on this page come in under 70 characters and will arrive as a single SMS. Five of the longer ones — including फूल लेकर आना आसान था। तेरे जैसा दोस्त मिलना आसान नहीं था। and आप जैसे दोस्त मिलना सौभाग्य की बात है। आपको जन्मदिन की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएं। — run past 70 and will split into two messages.

Rules of thumb:

  • WhatsApp, Instagram, iMessage: length is effectively not a problem. Send the longer, warmer messages.
  • SMS: use a short wish, and send the emoji in a separate message if you want one. Keep punctuation simple — curly quotes and the em dash also count as non-GSM characters.
  • If you are unsure what your network or app does: send yourself the message first. Length behaviour varies by carrier, handset and app, so the only reliable test is the one on your own phone.
  • Card or handwritten: use the long messages. There is no limit, and length reads as effort.

If you are late — belated birthday wishes in Hindi

A belated Hindi birthday wish names the lapse plainly and then gives the wish, which reads as honest rather than careless. Apologising twice reads worse than not apologising at all.

जन्मदिन तो निकल गया, माफ कर। देर से ही सही — जन्मदिन मुबारक हो यार!
Janmadin to nikal gaya, maaf kar. Der se hi sahi — janmadin mubarak ho yaar!
Your birthday has passed, forgive me. Late, but — happy birthday, yaar!

देर से भेज रहा हूँ, पर प्यार वही है। जन्मदिन मुबारक हो दोस्त।
Der se bhej raha hoon, par pyaar wahi hai. Janmadin mubarak ho dost.
I am sending this late, but the affection is the same. Happy birthday, dost.

याद था, भेजना भूल गया। अब साल भर इंतज़ार मत करवा। जन्मदिन मुबारक हो।
Yaad tha, bhejna bhool gaya. Ab saal bhar intezaar mat karwa. Janmadin mubarak ho.
I remembered; I just forgot to send. Do not make me wait a whole year now. Happy birthday.

Timing tip: send a belated wish the moment you remember, not on the next round-number day. A late wish loses its awkwardness quickly; an apology for a month-old birthday does not.

What not to send

Five things make a Hindi birthday wish read as machine-made or careless: mixed formality inside one message, the wrong possessive for your friend’s gender, आशीर्वाद offered between peers, सालगिरह used for a birthday, and a message so generic it could be sent to anyone.

The problem What it looks like The fix
Mixed formality तू खुश रह, और आपको बहुत प्यार। — तू and आप in one sentence Choose one register and hold it. If you start with तू, stay with तू.
Wrong possessive मेरा दोस्त written to a woman मेरी दोस्त. The noun is masculine; the possessive is not.
आशीर्वाद between peers Two friends of the same age blessing each other with आशीर्वाद Use दुआ. आशीर्वाद flows from elder to younger.
सालगिरह for a birthday सालगिरह मुबारक हो for a friend’s birthday सालगिरह is an anniversary word — and in Indian usage it usually means a wedding anniversary. The word is from Persian sāl-girih, “year-knot”, and means anniversary, with the sense “birthday” recorded for Pakistani usage (Wiktionary, سالگرہ). Use जन्मदिन.
A message that fits anyone A wish with no name, no memory, no detail — one that could go to a stranger with a cake Add one specific thing. A shared memory or an inside reference does more than any adjective.

The last one is the fault that matters most. All the grammar in the world will not save a wish that could have been sent to anyone.

Frequently asked questions

सबसे अच्छे दोस्त को जन्मदिन की शुभकामनाएं कैसे दें?

To wish your best friend a happy birthday in Hindi, pick the greeting first — जन्मदिन मुबारक हो for warmth, जन्मदिन की शुभकामनाएं for a slightly more considered tone — then set the register to तू if you are intimate, and add one detail that only the two of you would recognise. Send it in the morning if you can; a birthday wish that arrives first reads as remembered rather than prompted.

दिल को छू लेने वाली जन्मदिन की शुभकामनाएं क्या हैं?

A heart-touching birthday wish is one that names something true about the friendship rather than describing the occasion. तेरी दोस्ती मेरी सबसे बड़ी दौलत है moves people because it makes a claim about the sender’s life, not because the words are beautiful. Greetings that only wish happiness — however warm — tend to feel interchangeable; a line that admits what the friendship did for you does not.

जन्मदिन के लिए कुछ अच्छे संदेश क्या हैं?

Good birthday messages for a friend in Hindi are short, use the right register, and carry one personal line. Four that work for most close friends:

  • जन्मदिन मुबारक हो यार! आज तेरा दिन है, खूब मज़ा कर। — Happy birthday, yaar! Enjoy your day properly.
  • तेरी दोस्ती मेरी सबसे बड़ी दौलत है। जन्मदिन मुबारक हो। — Your friendship is my greatest wealth. Happy birthday.
  • हमेशा खुश रह, हमेशा हँसता रह। जन्मदिन मुबारक हो। — Stay happy always, keep smiling always. Happy birthday.
  • तेरे लिए यही दुआ है — तू हमेशा खुश रहे। जन्मदिन मुबारक हो दोस्त। — My wish for you is simply that you stay happy. Happy birthday, dost.

What are some unique birthday wishes for a best friend in English?

The page does not carry a separate set of ready-made English birthday wishes; it carries Hindi wishes with an English meaning beside each one, so you can send the Hindi and still know exactly what it says. That choice is deliberate — if your friend reads Hindi, a Hindi wish lands as more personal than an English one, because it says you thought about them in their language rather than your own. If you want the English wording instead, the translated line under any message above is written to be sent as it stands.
