To wish your best friend a happy birthday in Marathi, send a message that names them and closes with शुभेच्छा. The pattern: an address word, a line about the friendship, then वाढदिवसाच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा. Marathi verb forms differ for a male and a female friend, so gender-specific lines sit apart from neutral ones. Every line carries Devanagari, transliteration and English.
Every wish on this page is written to be sent by anyone. Marathi first-person possessives agree with the thing owned rather than with the speaker — माझा मित्र for a male friend, माझी मैत्रीण for a female friend — so none of these lines tells your friend whether you are a man or a woman unless you want it to.
Marathi birthday wishes for a best friend

A Marathi birthday message to a close friend works best in three parts: an address word such as मित्रा, one line about the friendship itself, and the closing वाढदिवसाच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा. The address word is what makes a general wish sound like it was written for one person, and the closing formula is what marks it as a birthday message rather than a greeting.
Read the Devanagari if you can. If you cannot, the Roman line underneath is the same Marathi words in English letters, and the English line tells you what you are sending.

Short Marathi birthday wishes for a best friend

A one-line Marathi birthday wish for a close friend pairs an address word with the शुभेच्छा formula and stops there, which is why it fits a message box and still reads as complete. A short wish of this kind runs between 30 and 47 Unicode characters in Devanagari, counting vowel signs, spaces and the closing punctuation, so none of them wraps awkwardly in a chat window.
For a male friend
तुझ्या वाढदिवसाच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा, मित्रा! (Tujhya vadhdivsachya hardik shubhechha, mitraa!) — Heartfelt birthday wishes, my friend!
वाढदिवसाच्या खूप खूप शुभेच्छा, मित्रा! (Vadhdivsachya khoop khoop shubhechha, mitraa!) — Many many birthday wishes, my friend!
जन्मदिवसाच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा, मित्रा! (Janmdivsachya hardik shubhechha, mitraa!) — Heartfelt birthday wishes, my friend!
For a female friend
तुझ्या वाढदिवसाच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा, मैत्रिणी! (Tujhya vadhdivsachya hardik shubhechha, maitrinee!) — Heartfelt birthday wishes, my friend!
वाढदिवसाच्या खूप खूप शुभेच्छा, मैत्रिणी! (Vadhdivsachya khoop khoop shubhechha, maitrinee!) — Many many birthday wishes, my friend!
जन्मदिवसाच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा, मैत्रिणी! (Janmdivsachya hardik shubhechha, maitrinee!) — Heartfelt birthday wishes, my friend!
For any friend
तुझ्या वाढदिवसाच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा! (Tujhya vadhdivsachya hardik shubhechha!) — Heartfelt birthday wishes to you!
वाढदिवसाच्या खूप खूप शुभेच्छा! (Vadhdivsachya khoop khoop shubhechha!) — Many many birthday wishes!
तुझ्या वाढदिवसाच्या कोटी कोटी शुभेच्छा! (Tujhya vadhdivsachya koti koti shubhechha!) — A million birthday wishes to you!
जन्मदिवसाच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा! (Janmdivsachya hardik shubhechha!) — Heartfelt birthday wishes!
On the intensifiers. शुभेच्छा on its own is enough. खूप खूप adds warmth, कोटी कोटी is expansive, अनंत is literary, and मनःपूर्वक means sincere. As a general guide, खूप खूप reads casual and warm, while मनःपूर्वक reads more formal and suits a message you are writing carefully.
Funny Marathi birthday wishes for a best friend

A funny Marathi birthday wish for a close friend teases something the two of you share, and still closes with a real शुभेच्छा, so the joke lands without the affection being lost. A teasing wish works only if teasing is already part of how you talk to each other.
1
वय वाढतंय, पण तुझी अक्कल तिथेच आहे. वाढदिवसाच्या खूप खूप शुभेच्छा!
Vay vadhtay, pan tujhi akkal tithech aahe. Vadhdivsachya khoop khoop shubhechha!
You are getting older, but your common sense is exactly where it was. Many many birthday wishes!
2
आज केक तुझा, पण बिल माझं नाही. वाढदिवसाच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा!
Aaj cake tujha, pan bill majha nahi. Vadhdivsachya hardik shubhechha!
Today the cake is yours, but the bill is not mine. Heartfelt birthday wishes!
3
तुझा वाढदिवस म्हणजे माझ्यासाठी खाण्याचा दिवस. वाढदिवसाच्या शुभेच्छा!
Tujha vadhdivas mhanje majhyasathi khanyacha divas. Vadhdivsachya shubhechha!
Your birthday is, for me, a day for eating. Birthday wishes to you!
4
आता तू मोठा झालायस, पण वागणं तसंच ठेव. वाढदिवसाच्या खूप खूप शुभेच्छा!
Aata tu motha zhalays, pan vagan tasach thev. Vadhdivsachya khoop khoop shubhechha!
You have grown up now, but keep behaving exactly the same. Many many birthday wishes!
5
मेणबत्त्या फुंकताना आधी माझ्यासाठी केक ठेव. वाढदिवसाच्या शुभेच्छा!
Menabattya phunkatana aadhi majhyasathi cake thev. Vadhdivsachya shubhechha!
Before you blow out the candles, save me some cake. Birthday wishes!
On the honesty rule. A section labelled funny has to contain jokes. Some Marathi birthday pages label a section funny and then fill it with sentimental lines, which leaves a reader searching for a joke that never arrives.
Marathi birthday shayari for a best friend

A Marathi birthday shayari for a close friend is a short rhymed verse, usually two to four lines, that closes with the शुभेच्छा formula. Shayari is the word people use for short emotionally concentrated verse, and it describes a style rather than a Marathi classical form.
Why shayari is the word used for Marathi greeting verse
Marathi’s own named short-verse traditions are classical and devotional, which is why modern Marathi greeting verse borrowed the shayari convention instead. Ovi, the meter used in Marathi poems for rhythmic narrative, has been in written use since the 13th century and is associated with the Varkari saint Dnyaneshwar, while abhanga is the meter used for lyrical and devotional verse and is attributed to Tukaram.
Ovi and abhanga carry devotion and narrative weight. Nobody composes an abhanga to wish a friend a happy birthday. So the borrowed word shayari covers a lighter thing: two or four rhymed lines about a friendship, which is what a birthday message needs.
1
आपली मैत्री जुनी आहे,
पण आजही ताजी आहे.
वाढदिवसाच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा, मित्रा!
Aapli maitri juni aahe,
pan aajhi taji aahe.
Vadhdivsachya hardik shubhechha, mitraa!
Our friendship is old, and still fresh today. Heartfelt birthday wishes, my friend!
2
एक वर्ष गेलं, एक वर्ष आलं,
तुझं हसू मात्र तसंच राहिलं.
वाढदिवसाच्या खूप खूप शुभेच्छा!
Ek varsh gela, ek varsh aala,
tujha hasu matra tasach rahila.
Vadhdivsachya khoop khoop shubhechha!
A year went, a year came, and your smile stayed exactly the same. Many many birthday wishes!
3
तू दूर असलास तरी जवळ आहेस,
तू व्यस्त असलास तरी माझा आहेस.
वाढदिवसाच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा!
Tu door aslas tari javal aahes,
tu vyast aslas tari majha aahes.
Vadhdivsachya hardik shubhechha!
Even far away you are close, even busy you are still mine. Heartfelt birthday wishes!
4
केक कापशील, मेणबत्त्या विझवशील,
आणि माझी आठवण काढशील.
वाढदिवसाच्या शुभेच्छा, मित्रा!
Cake kapshil, menabattya vizvashil,
aani majhi aathvan kadhshil.
Vadhdivsachya shubhechha, mitraa!
You will cut the cake, blow out the candles, and remember me. Birthday wishes, my friend!
Writing your own. Three things make a working two-line verse.
- One shared image. Start with something concrete you both know: a place, a habit, a joke.
- One turn in the second line. Say what the image means to you, rather than describing it again.
- The formula at the end. Close with वाढदिवसाच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा, so the verse reads as a birthday message.
Do not force a rhyme. A forced rhyme is more noticeable than no rhyme at all.
A long WhatsApp birthday message for a best friend

A longer Marathi birthday message for a close friend follows four moves: greet, name one shared memory, wish something for the year ahead, then close with the शुभेच्छा formula. Four moves is enough for a message that reads as written rather than forwarded, and it fits one WhatsApp message without a scroll.
Write the greeting first, put the memory second, then the wish, then the formula. If you only have time for two moves, keep the greeting and the formula and skip the rest.

Vadhdivsachya khoop khoop shubhechha!
Dear friend, today is your day. May your life never be short of happiness. Many many birthday wishes!
With your friend’s name in it
Putting your friend’s name in the message is what turns a template into something they will keep. In the templates above, the name replaces the address word after प्रिय: प्रिय आर्या, प्रिय स्नेहा, and the rest of the message stays the same. How to spell a name in Devanagari is covered below.
Instagram captions and WhatsApp status wishes in Marathi

A Marathi birthday caption for Instagram or a WhatsApp status needs to fit one or two lines on screen, carry the शुभेच्छा closing, and make sense with no conversation around it. The three status lines on this page measure 38, 17 and 30 Unicode characters in Devanagari, counted the same way, and the caption lines run longer, up to 53, because a caption sits under a photograph that carries part of the meaning.
For a status
वाढदिवसाच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा, मित्रा! (Vadhdivsachya hardik shubhechha, mitraa!) — Heartfelt birthday wishes, my friend!
आज तुझा दिवस आहे! (Aaj tujha divas aahe!) — Today is your day!
वाढदिवसाच्या खूप खूप शुभेच्छा! (Vadhdivsachya khoop khoop shubhechha!) — Many many birthday wishes!
For a caption under a photo
माझा मित्र, माझा आधार. वाढदिवसाच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा! (Majha mitra, majha aadhar. Vadhdivsachya hardik shubhechha!) — My friend, my support. Heartfelt birthday wishes!
वर्षानुवर्षे तीच मैत्री. वाढदिवसाच्या शुभेच्छा! (Varshanuvarshe tich maitri. Vadhdivsachya shubhechha!) — Year after year, the same friendship. Birthday wishes!
खूप खूप शुभेच्छा, माझ्या मित्रा! (Khoop khoop shubhechha, majhya mitraa!) — Many many wishes, my friend!
What changes between a message and a caption. A status is seen by everyone on your list, so it drops anything private and keeps the friendship general. A caption sits under a photo and can therefore be shorter, because the photograph is doing part of the work. Neither should carry the name unless the friend is happy to be named publicly.
What do you call your best friend in Marathi?

Marathi has its own words for a close friend: जिवलग मित्र for a close male friend, मैत्रीण for a female friend, and बालमित्र for a childhood friend, alongside the widely used English loan बेस्ट फ्रेंड. Choosing between them is a question of how the word sounds in your mouth, because they all mean friend and none of them is wrong.
| Marathi term | Roman | Who it refers to | Register |
| मित्र | mitra | A male friend | Neutral, standard; slightly formal on its own |
| मैत्रीण | maitreen | A female friend | Neutral in everyday use; a second dictionary sense is recorded below |
| मित्रा | mitraa | A male friend, when you are speaking to him | Warm; the form used in a message |
| जिवलग मित्र | jivlag mitra | A very close male friend | Warm and emphatic; the closest Marathi equivalent of “best friend” |
| बालमित्र | baalmitra | A friend from childhood | Specific, slightly literary |
| पत्रमित्र | patramitra | A friend you know by letter or online | Specific; useful when the friendship is long-distance |
| सखा | sakha | A close companion, often male | Literary and elevated |
| स्नेही | snehi | A friend, affectionate | Softer than मित्र |
| सोबती | sobati | A companion, one who is with you | Everyday |
| दोस्त | dost | A friend | Casual, borrowed from Hindi and Urdu |
| यार | yaar | A friend | Casual, borrowed; very affectionate |
| बेस्ट फ्रेंड | best friend | A best friend | English loan, extremely common in speech |
Why “best friend” has no single Marathi word. जिवलग मित्र comes closest, and it is the term to use if you want the message to sound Marathi rather than translated. The English word बेस्ट फ्रेंड is everywhere in Marathi conversation, so it is not a mistake to use it. It just sounds different.
The address word, and how formal to be
The word you use to address your friend directly carries more social information than the rest of the message does. मित्रा, जिवलग मित्र, सखा and दोस्त are all used for a male friend, and they sit at different temperatures: मित्रा is warm and safe, सखा sounds literary, दोस्त and यार are casual and code-mixed.
Two address words also carry a recorded second sense, so it is worth knowing before you write around them. Marathi WordNet lists मैत्रीण both as a female friend and as a woman in an affectionate relationship with a man, and its example sentence is about marrying her. मैत्रीण is therefore a friendship word with a romantic dictionary reading attached, and the reading is easy to trigger by accident: affectionate and romantic lines can look almost identical to someone who does not read the script. This page uses the friendship sense throughout. Keep the sentence around the word clearly about friendship, and the word stays a friendship word.
तू or तुम्ही
A close friend is addressed with तू, and anyone you would treat with formal respect takes तुम्ही. The choice is not a matter of taste: Marathi has three second-person forms and they are grammatical, so the choice changes the verb in your sentence.
| Form | Used for | Effect in a birthday message |
| तू | A close friend, a peer, someone younger | Warm and direct; the right default for a best friend |
| तुम्ही | Someone older, a senior, a teacher, an acquaintance | Respectful; used with a close friend it can sound oddly distant |
| आपण | Extremely formal, or inclusive “we” | Out of place in a birthday message to a friend |
A message that opens with तुम्ही is not rude, but it reads as though it were written by someone who does not know them well.
Writing your friend’s name in Marathi

Writing an English name in Marathi means spelling it in Devanagari by its sound, and because the script records sound rather than spelling, one name can be written in more than one valid way. An English spelling like “Siobhan” carries no useful information for writing the name in Marathi. You write what you hear.
Devanagari also does not show every vowel that is pronounced, which catches out anyone reading the script letter by letter. Some vowels that the script writes are dropped in speech in Marathi, and the writing does not mark where. वाढदिवसाच्या therefore appears in Roman letters here as vadhdivsachya rather than letter by letter.
Practically, this means three things.
Watch the vowels. English vowels are written loosely, and Devanagari has distinct short and long forms. A name with a long vowel sound in the middle usually takes a long vowel sign.
Decide the ending. English names often end in sounds that have no single Devanagari equivalent, so an ending will be a judgement call. Whatever you choose, use it consistently.
Ask, if you can. A friend who writes their name in Marathi already has a spelling they use, and using theirs is better than inventing one. If you cannot ask without ruining the surprise, keep the name in English letters inside an otherwise Marathi message. That is completely normal in a WhatsApp message and no one will think it strange.
Name spelling is the one part of a Marathi birthday message you cannot check by looking it up. If you are unsure and cannot ask, leave the name out and use an address word instead: मित्रा or मैत्रिणी carries the same warmth without the risk of a misspelt name.
What not to send in a Marathi birthday message
Four things cause most of the trouble in a Marathi birthday message to a friend: lines written for a partner, Hindi lines mistaken for Marathi, formal register used with a close friend, and copied text that has drifted in circulation. Each one is easy to avoid once you know to look for it.
Lines written for a partner. Marathi birthday pages mix romantic verse with friend wishes in the same list, and the two are not interchangeable. A line about love or longing sent to a friend changes what the message is, and your friend will read it as such. The address words make this harder to spot: मैत्रीण carries a romantic sense in the dictionary, so a line that sounds affectionate and a line that sounds romantic can be nearly identical to someone who does not read the script.
Hindi lines mistaken for Marathi. Marathi and Hindi share the Devanagari script, so a Hindi line sitting inside a Marathi message is invisible to anyone who does not read the language. It happens on real pages: lines such as तेरे जैसा यार कहा and the Hindi बेस्ट फ्रेंड जैसा appear inside collections published as Marathi. If you cannot read the script, the English meaning printed next to each line on this page is your only check, so use it.
Formal register with a close friend. तुम्ही used with a best friend reads as distance. It is not an insult, but it does not sound like a friendship.
Text that has drifted in circulation. Marathi wish lines are copied from site to site, and copies change. One widely circulated verse about a birthday being like a flowing spring appears in a clean version on some pages and in a visibly broken version, misspelled and with a duplicated phrase, on others. If a line reads oddly, or if your phone renders it with stray characters, do not send it.
All four error classes share the same property: someone who does not read Marathi cannot see any of them. The meaning and the transliteration therefore matter more than they might seem to.
Belated wishes, friends living abroad, and timing

A belated Marathi birthday message should say in its first line that the wish is late, rather than pretending the date is right. Belated wishes are normal, and the awkwardness comes from a message that pretends, not from one that apologises.
For a late message
उशिरा का होईना, वाढदिवसाच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा!
Ushira ka hoina, vadhdivsachya hardik shubhechha!
Even if late, heartfelt birthday wishes!
माफ कर, उशीर झाला. वाढदिवसाच्या खूप खूप शुभेच्छा!
Maaf kar, ushir zhala. Vadhdivsachya khoop khoop shubhechha!
Forgive me, I am late. Many many birthday wishes!
If your friend lives abroad. Send the message on your friend’s local day rather than your own. India runs on a single time zone, UTC+05:30, and does not shift for daylight saving, while every zone in the contiguous United States runs behind it. If your friend’s birthday is today in India, a message sent in your American morning reaches them during their day, and a message sent late in your evening can arrive after their date has already turned. When in doubt, send a few hours early rather than late. Early reads as keen; late reads as forgotten.
If you cannot read Devanagari: the Roman version
The Roman transliteration printed with each line spells the same Marathi words in English letters so a sender who does not read Devanagari can read the wish aloud, while the Devanagari stays there for whoever does read it. The transliteration is a reading aid and not a separate language: it records sound, so saying it out loud reproduces the Marathi.
Marathi greetings are transliterated in many different ways in the wild. One closing formula appears as Vadhdivsachya Hardik Shubhechha, WADH DIVSACHYA HARDIK SHUBHECHCHA and Vāḍhadivasācyā hārdika śubhēcchā on different pages, which makes it hard to tell whether two lines are the same words or different ones. The transliteration on this page uses one readable Roman scheme throughout, without diacritics, so that the same Marathi word always looks the same.
In that scheme, a long final vowel is marked, because it changes the word. मित्रा, the form you use when speaking to a male friend, is written mitraa, while plain मित्र, the noun, is written mitra. The two are not interchangeable in a message.
How to read the Roman lines
| Roman | Say it roughly as |
| aa | a long “a”, as in father |
| i | a short “i”, as in bit |
| ee | a longer “ee”, as in see |
| oo / u | “oo”, as in book |
| ai / au | as in eye and how |
| bh, dh, gh, jh | the consonant with a breathy puff after it |
| t, d, n | made with the tongue further forward than in English |
How to pronounce the closing formula. वाढदिवसाच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा runs as four words: VA-dhdi-vsa-chya HAR-dik shu-BHECH-chha. The च्छ in शुभेच्छा is a doubled ch sound, and the final is a soft “chha” rather than a “cha”.
The phrase itself. To say happy birthday in Marathi, the phrase to use is वाढदिवसाच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा. The word वाढदिवस is वाढ, growth, joined to दिवस, day, so the phrase is built on the birthday word itself, and a friend would normally hear it with an address word or their name in front of it.
What वाढदिवस means. The same word also carries the general sense of an anniversary, which is why companies tend to use its synonym वर्धापनदिन instead. जन्मदिवस, built from जन्म, birth, and दिवस, is the other everyday word for a birthday, and both appear in birthday wishes.
Two honest limits. Roman letters cannot reproduce Marathi’s short and long vowels or its breathy consonants exactly, so any transliteration is approximate. And if you are going to record a voice note rather than type the message, ask a Marathi speaker to read it once for you first. A line spoken with the wrong stress can be harder to follow than a line typed badly.
Where these wishes came from, and who checked them
Every Marathi line on this page was composed for this page rather than copied from another site. The closing formula, वाढदिवसाच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा, is a traditional Marathi greeting that appears across many pages in slightly different forms; this page uses one form of it throughout, so that what you copy always matches what you see.
Reviewed for Marathi by [NATIVE-SPEAKER REVIEWER, NAME TO BE ADDED BEFORE PUBLICATION]. Corrections from Marathi speakers are welcome and are reviewed, and the page records the date of its last language review separately from its publication date.
A note on what this page does not cover
Coverage on this page is limited to birthday wishes for one friend, in one language, for one occasion. Birthday messages for a partner, a mother, a father, a brother, a sister or a colleague each use a different address word and a different level of respect, and they are covered on their own pages.
The page also does not print quotations from Marathi poets or lyricists. Quoting a named writer creates an attribution obligation, and a misattributed line is worse than no line, so the verses here are original or traditional and labelled as one or the other.
One term is deliberately absent. चारोळी is sometimes offered as a native name for a short Marathi verse, and reliable sources disagree about both its length and its origin, so it has been left out rather than explained incorrectly.
